Text to speech (TTS) converts written text into spoken audio. Paste or type anything and hear it read aloud with a natural voice, at the speed and pitch you choose. It runs on the speech engine built into your browser, so nothing is installed and no audio is generated on a server.
People use TTS to proofread by ear, catching errors that eyes skip over, to listen to articles while doing something else, to check how written dialogue sounds, and as an accessibility aid for reading fatigue, dyslexia, and low vision.
Your eyes autocorrect familiar text, gliding over missing words, doubled words, and clumsy phrasing. Your ears do not. Hearing your writing read aloud is one of the most reliable editing techniques there is: errors that survived three silent read-throughs jump out in the first listen. Writers, students, and editors use TTS exactly this way before submitting anything important.
This tool uses the Web Speech API, the speech synthesis engine already inside your browser and operating system. Voice selection depends on your device: Windows offers different voices than macOS, Android, or iOS, and installing system language packs adds more. Because synthesis is local, it works offline and your text never leaves the device.
TTS is a core assistive technology for people with dyslexia, low vision, or reading fatigue, and it doubles as a convenience for everyone else: listen to a long article while commuting, have notes read back while your hands are busy, or learn the pronunciation of text in another language by hearing it spoken.
