This tool spells out a number in English words. Type 1234 and it returns one thousand two hundred thirty-four. It handles whole numbers and large values, applying the correct grouping for thousands, millions, billions, and beyond.
Writing numbers as words is common on checks, legal documents, and invoices, where the written form prevents tampering and removes ambiguity. It is also useful for accessibility, learning, and anywhere a number needs to be read aloud or confirmed in full.
On a check, the amount is written in words so it cannot be easily altered, and the words take priority if they disagree with the figures. Legal contracts and invoices often spell out key amounts for the same reason. Writing numbers in full also helps with clarity in formal documents and for readers using screen readers.
English groups digits in threes and names each group: thousand, million, billion, trillion, and so on. So 2,500,000 becomes two million five hundred thousand. The converter reads each group, adds the right scale word, and joins them, which is exactly the process you would follow by hand but without the slips.
Numbers from twenty-one to ninety-nine are hyphenated, like forty-two, which this tool does automatically. American usage generally omits the word and between the hundreds and the rest, writing one hundred five rather than one hundred and five, while British usage often includes it. The output follows the common American convention.
