Almost every percent problem is one of three shapes. What is 20 percent of 150? Multiply 150 by 0.20 to get 30. What percent is 30 of 150? Divide 30 by 150 and multiply by 100 to get 20 percent. What is the change from 150 to 180? The difference of 30 divided by the original 150 gives a 20 percent increase.
For a 25 percent discount on a 60 dollar item, the reduction is 15, so you pay 45. For a tip, 15 percent of a 40 dollar bill is 6. Sales tax works the same way in reverse: an 8 percent tax on 100 adds 8. The calculator does these instantly, which is handy at checkout or when reviewing an invoice.
Percentage change is always measured against the starting value. Going from 100 to 150 is a 50 percent increase, but going from 150 back to 100 is a 33 percent decrease. This asymmetry trips people up constantly, and it is why a price that drops 50 percent must then rise 100 percent to recover.
